چکیده

Heterotopic brain tissue within the pharynx is an extremely rare cond ition of infancy and childhood. The most frequent presentation is respiratory distress. There are 11 cases in the literature to date in which c linical and patholog ic aspects are emphasized, all with a paucity of radiologic features [1]. We are reporting a twelfth case, histologically proven, which includes computed tomographic (CT) demonstration in ax ial, co ronal, and sagittal planes, conventional radiography, and poly tomography.

Heterotopic neuroglial tissue causing airway obstruction in the newborn.

BACKGROUND Heterotopic neuroglial (brain) tissue is a rare cause of airway obstruction in newborns. Fewer than 30 cases have been reported in the English literature. Brain heterotopias can mimic more common congenital anomalies of the head and neck. OBJECTIVE To review our experience in the diagnosis and treatment of children with heterotopic pharyngeal neuroglial tissue. DESIGN Case series...

Dual embryonic origin and patterning of the pharyngeal skeleton in the axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum).

The impressive morphological diversification of vertebrates was achieved in part by innovation and modification of the pharyngeal skeleton. Extensive fate mapping in amniote models has revealed a primarily cranial neural crest derivation of the pharyngeal skeleton. Although comparable fate maps of amphibians produced over several decades have failed to document a neural crest derivation of vent...

Hemiplegia and heterotopic ossification on the non-paretic extremity: a case report.

Heterotopic ossification is the formation of new bone in an abnormal location. It is usually seen following central nervous system disorders, including spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, encephalitis, and burn and trauma. Heterotopic ossification in post-stroke hemiplegia is rare; the reported incidence is 0.5-1.2%. It usually occurs on the paretic side of hemiplegic patients. We prese...

Acid Secretion From a Heterotopic Gastric Mucosa in the Upper Esophagus Demonstrated by Dual Probe 24-hour Ambulatory pH Monitoring

Heterotopic gastric mucosa in the upper esophagus is frequently found during endoscopic examination. Although most patients with heterotopic gastric mucosa of the upper esophagus, referred as inlet patch, are asymptomatic, symptomatic patients with complications resulting from this ectopic mucosa have also been reported. Acid secretion by the inlet patch has been suggested in some reports. We r...

The presence of heterotopic cartilage under the skin in the head and neck region constitutes a cartilaginous choristoma. Theoretically the choristomas can be of different types such as heterotopic presence of thyroid gland, bone, glial tissue and salivary gland, etc. The common theme shared by different choristomas is that these are very slow growing and benign. The excision is generally done e...
